The Maternity Hospital

Institucional

The São Luiz Maternity Hospital opened in 1983, at the Itaim unit, innovating two concepts: hospital hotel services and humanization. The project privileges the pregnant woman’s and the baby’s comfort and safety in all aspects from decoration to architecture, together with medical excellence. São Luiz was the creator of the sectorial baby nursery, one on each floor, leaving the baby always next to the mother. All this is found at the best equipped maternity hospital in the country.

The Obstetric Center has a multiprofessional team, ten labour rooms, three rooms for gynaecological surgery, nine pre-partum rooms, post-anaesthesia recovery and newborn resuscitation rooms. The pre-partum team supports every pregnant woman, through foetal and maternal monitoring. A complete structure equipped to attend any kind of delivery. A modern system of laminar flow allows the control of temperature, pressure and air humidity.

With the implementation of the Fetal Medicine Unit in 1996, the São Luiz Maternity Hospital started to treat babies still in the uterus with the same technical and scientific expertise as found in the countries mostly advanced in this field.

Benchmark in Neonatal ICU

A Neonatal Intensive Care Center is a reference in Latin America in this field. It has a staff that has been working together for over 20 years composed of neonatologists, cardiologists, neurologists, orthopedists, speech & hearing therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists and a team of nurses that constantly attends refreshment courses. It also has the active participation of the parents in the baby’s care. Everything to ensure a healthy evolution to the newborn.

In order to support the humanization actions of nursery services, the Neonatal Humanization Incentive Group was created. The team encourages the attendance and participation of the family during the newborn’s hospitalization, develops Continuing Education actions for employees who provide neonatal assistance, and provides courses and training sessions to encourage the technical and scientific development of the nursery teams. The group promotes integration with professionals of other institutions, divulges scientific and instructional production by means of publications and events, and operates as a reference for neonatology studies and reviews.

Mother Breastfeeding Group (GAAM)

São Luiz created the Mother Breastfeeding Group (GAAM), a staff available to guide and ease the first contact with the newborn during the hospital admittance and after the hospital discharge. It also has a milk bank for babies with special conditions.

The Human Milk Bank is one of the most modern ones in the market, with collection and pasteurization rooms according to National Health Surveillance Agency rules - Anvisa. Human milk is treated with no nutritional losses and the level of fat is controlled. São Luiz also has a space exclusively dedicated to collect milk from mothers whose babies are kept admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Center.
