SãoLuiz General and Maternity Hospital was founded in 1938 by physicians Alceu de Campos Rodrigues, Renato Fairbanks Barbosa, and Paulo Gomes Carneiro. It was founded in Itaim Bibi as a polyclinic with 12 beds at that time. In 1940, the unit became the first emergency center in the region. Twenty years later, already as a hospital, São Luiz offered 80 beds to the community. In 1983, the São Luiz Maternity Hospital was opened. The Diagnosis Center was opened eleven years later.
São Luiz is presently considered as one of the most advanced hospitals in the country and is a national reference as a maternity hospital, general hospital, and emergency room. The policlinic, opened 69 years ago, now has three units: a general hospital and a maternity hospital are located in the district of Itaim Bibi; a general hospital is located in the district of Morumbi; and a general hospital and a maternity hospital are located in the district of Tatuapé.
Well known for its advanced technology and services quality, São Luiz’s units admit monthly 2.8 thousand patients, perform 2.1 thousand surgeries, 25 thousand emergency admissions, make 49 thousand exams in its diagnosis centers and 9 thousand deliveries a year. The company has 3.5 thousand employees and approximately 11 thousand associated physicians. The chain has 524 beds and it is going to have an additional 279 beds in its new Anália Franco branch, in the Tatuapé District.
São Luiz is proud to keep a general level of hospital infection significantly lower than the domestic and international standards. Such an achievement is the result of an efficient epidemiology surveillance service rendered by members of the Service for the Control of Hospital Infection (SCHI).
In the surgical field, São Luiz has made investments to create a more appropriate environment, with state-of-the-art equipment to perform the most complex procedures in the urological, neurological, cardiovascular, thoracic and transplantation fields, among others. The Surgery Center of the Itaim Unit has 18 operating rooms, the Morumbi unit has 13 and Anália Franco has 18 rooms.
São Luiz presently has one of the best hospital hotel services in the country. Its accommodations are in accordance with the international standards in terms of comfort and safety, placing patient welfare as the top priority.
